ABSTRACT BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: The absence or failure to identify and correctly manage pain impairs the recovery of newborn admitted Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), with long-term consequences. objective was describe knowledge nursing team on evaluation management term preterm newborns in NICU, as well daily challenges. METHODS: Descriptive, cross-sectional study a quantitative approach, developed public general hospital Sao Paulo. RESULTS: 44 professionals participated; melody crying (100%), heart rate (99%) trembling hands feet (90%) were most pointed changes face pain. Attention deficit school (95%), less tolerance adulthood (77%), propensity develop depression anxiety (73%) reported Non-nutritive sucking (92%), breastfeeding (88%) kangaroo method (79%) widely used non-pharmacological methods. prevalent challenges medical conduct (23%) difficulty assessing specific signs (16%), addition an notification 22%. CONCLUSION: about patients NICU demonstrated clarity hemodynamic changes, consequences exposure mastery strategies. There is underreporting presence after communicating signs, directing actions improve care such training.
